At the heart of our boutique firm are two passionate lawyers, Victoria Santoro and Jessica Gray, who are redefining what it means to practice personal injury law in Massachusetts. In an industry often driven by efficiency and profit margins, Tori and Jess are on a different path – one that values meaningful client relationships, community involvement, and strategic litigation.
At Santoro & Gray, our approach is focused on bringing real support and equity to our clients and the community. In this blog, we’ll dive into our firm’s values and what drives us to be different from the majority, the changes we hope to see in the legal industry, and the impactful cases that have shaped our journey.
How Our Values Differ
Like many others, the legal industry is often driven by market forces, leading to the rise of high-volume law firms. These firms focus on quick turnarounds, efficiency, and maximizing profits, often at the expense of meaningful client relationships and thorough case preparation. This approach has its downsides, including a lack of personalized attention, and, perhaps most sadly, many lawyers now see trials as expense centers – costly and far too risky to pursue.
Tori and Jess have chosen a different path. They are deliberately moving in the opposite direction of these market trends. Their focus is on meaningful, strategic litigation, where every step is carefully considered and tailored to the unique needs of each client. Unlike high-volume firms, they aren’t driven by profit margins but by the desire to bring real change to their clients’ lives.
Changes We Hope To See In The Legal Industry
Caseload Reduction
With the push for even more cases, even more profit, and even more settlements, the cost is seen and felt. This is true not only in case value but also in client service and attorney well-being. Litigation requires such intense attention to detail and single-minded devotion to the case that large caseloads inevitably reduce the lawyer’s bandwidth for each individual matter.
Similarly, this intense pressure can place a strain on the lawyer herself, with dramatic reductions in quality of life and wellness overall. Make no mistake – a balanced and content lawyer is a good lawyer. A happy lawyer brings her full suite of talents to a case. It is our goal to hire and raise happy lawyers who can remain in litigation for the whole of their careers if they so choose.
Increased Community Involvement and Leadership
Many Bar leaders have noted a reduction in the overall involvement of new lawyers in our legal community. This is evidenced by lower in-person attendance at important legal education seminars and social events. We would like to see a resumption of the belief that practicing as an attorney is a community-facing role with all the attendant duties that come with it.
Our law firm supports Bar Association membership, but more importantly, we support meaningful involvement leading to leadership positions and roles. The legal community will only benefit from us knowing one another, working together, and supporting one another.
Supporting New Lawyers in the Courtroom
By far, the greatest difficulty among new litigators is getting into the courtroom. Whether it’s something momentous like a jury trial or simply a motion hearing, we provide courtroom opportunities to newer attorneys who are eager to get a feel for the atmosphere. Juries are asked to serve and represent our communities, and our communities are growing increasingly diverse, so legal representation should reflect that.
We need litigators who bring a wealth of different experiences, wisdom, and insight to the courtroom so that we can continue to effectively try cases to juries. Additionally, it’s important to let new lawyers know that courtroom opportunities still exist. There is no greater teacher than the courtroom.
Our Clients: The Heartbeat Of Our Firm
Recognizing The Impact of Invisible Illnesses
When it comes to cases involving visible injuries, the path to justice is often more straightforward. The suffering is clear, and the need for justice is unquestioned. However, many of our clients suffer from invisible injuries, such as head injuries or trauma from sexual assault. These clients face unique challenges because their suffering isn’t immediately visible to others. This often leads to them being overlooked or unfairly judged.
For these clients, our role extends beyond legal representation; it involves providing validation, empathy, and a listening ear. Often, the most significant impact we can have is simply acknowledging their pain and reassuring them that they are not at fault.
Inspiration Through Service: Our Clients’ Role In Our Firm’s Culture
One of the most impactful cases we’ve handled involved the long-term representation of a client in a state-run rehabilitation facility. Our client, who had suffered a severe spinal cord injury, spent four years away from their family in this grim environment plagued by health code violations and substandard living conditions.
Despite the challenging conditions, our client showed remarkable resilience. Their love for their family and determination to overcome the circumstances were truly inspiring. Throughout this difficult period, we remained dedicated to our client and their case, ensuring that they were never forgotten. This case exemplified the profound impact of dedication and compassion in our practice.
In every case we take on, we strive to make a difference not only in the legal outcome but also in the lives of our clients. Our commitment to understanding their unique struggles and advocating fiercely on their behalf is what sets us apart. Whether dealing with clients or working to improve the legal industry, we are dedicated to providing the highest level of care and support, ensuring that our clients feel valued and heard.
